An actively spawning female specimen of the Phaeton dragonet Synchiropus phaeton (Günther, 1861) of 22 cm TL was recorded with bottom trawl in Atlantic Portuguese waters. The identification of the specimen is confirmed by morphometric and meristic parameters as well as DNA barcoding. This northernmost record from the Eastern Atlantic provides new maximum length reference for the species. The histological examination of reproductive tissue in S. phaeton reveals that this species is a batch spawner with an asynchronous ovarian development organization.
