The yellowfin surgeonfish Acanthurus xanthopterus is distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and the eastern Pacific, from the coasts of Africa to the coasts of the Americas. In the eastern Pacific, it extends from the Gulf of California to Ecuador. Two specimens of yellowfin surgeonfish, caught in northern Peru in February 2019, are reported: the first from Puerto Morin (08°24’02”S; 78°54 03”W), and the second one from Puerto Salaverry (Punta Gorda) (08°17’00”S; 78°57’48”W). Although the presence of A. xanthopterus in the north of the country could be occasional, it is also a hint of a possible population establishment in Peruvian waters, encouraging us to keep investigating about the population structure and life history of this species.
